THE DETERMINATION OF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS' ATTITUDES TO VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN IN THE CONTEXT OF THEIR PERCEPTIONS OF GENDER AND INTERPERSONAL COGNITIVE DISTORTIONS

The aim of this study is to determine the university students' attitudes to violence against women in the context of their perceptions of gender and interpersonal cognitive distortions. This descriptive study is the cross-sectional in design. It was conducted in February, March, April, May, June 2022 with 401 students (aged >18 years) who were studying in Ardahan University. The data collected with a descriptive information form, The Perception of Gender Scale, The Interpersonal Cognitive Distortions Scale and ISKEBE Violence against Women Attitude Scale. Institutional permission for the study and Ardahan University Scientific Research and Publication Ethics Committee approval were obtained. Descriptive analyses, structural equation model and the bootstrap test method were performed. First, the efect of the independent variable on the dependent variable was examined, and then, when the mediating variable was included in the model, its efect on the dependent variable was examined. The study revealed that students' scale mean scores were 131.81±16.33 for attitudes to violence against women, 100.40±17.38 for perceptions of gender, 57.43±12.02 for interpersonal cognitive distortions. There was a positive relationship between the attitude of violence against women and the perception of gender, and a negative relationship between the interpersonal cognitive distortions. A negative correlation was found between the perception of gender and interpersonal cognitive distortions. University students' perceptions of gender was fully mediating in the correlation between their attitudes to violence against women and interpersonal cognitive distortions. So the full mediating role of the perceptions of gender positively predicted the interpersonal cognitive distortions. University students' sex did not moderate this association. As a result, especially the Women and Family Studies Application and Research Centers of Universities should work towards creating a positive perceptions of gender at students. Thus, the findings suggest that a primary prevention strategy can be taken in violence against women.
