Aim: In recent years social media became a major medium for medical and psychological information sharing. Among these, Youtube seems to be a subject for content analysis studies in various medical and social fields. This study aimed to evaluate quality and patterns of contents of Youtube videos on psychological violence (PV).
Methods: A search on Youtube with the keyword “psikolojik þiddet” (Turkish translation of psychological violence) was conducted and first 200 videos on Youtube default search mode listed. Several features of videos were like source of video, duration, upload time, number of likes and views recorded. Also contents of videos were classified and videos were evaluated according to three quality of content parameters, DISCERN, Global Quality Scale (GSQ) and Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA).
Results: A total number of 74 videos were further analyzed after applying the exclusion criteria. Most common source of videos was psychologists (48,6%). Most of the videos (31 of 74 videos – 41,9%) had a primary focus on PV in romantic relationships. Mean DISCERN score was 30,7, mean GSQ score was 2,52 and mean JAMA score was 1,60. Videos from psychologists and psychiatrists had a significantly higher scores on content quality compared to other sources.
Conclusion: Although PV seems to be a hot topic in means of Youtube video sharing, contents are relatively low quality compared to videos on other health related subjects. Mental health professionals share videos with more evidence based information. Nevertheless, psychiatrists are under-represented in theme, which is highly related to psychiatry practice
