THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SEXUAL ORIENTATION, DEPRESSION, PSYCHOLOGICAL PAIN, SUICIDAL IDEATION, PERCEIVED SOCIAL SUPPORT AND LIFE SATISFACTION
 
The first aim of this study was to investigate whether depression, suicidal ideation, psychological pain, perceived social support and life satisfaction differ by sexual orientations. Between the age range of 18-62 (Mean=29.16 & SD.= 9.26), based on the assigned at birth/biological sex 158 (60.8%) females, 102 (39.2%) males (39.2%) and based on the sexual orientation, 70 homosexual (26.9%), 62 bisexual (23.8%) and 128 heterosexual (49.2%) individuals, took part in the research with the total of 260 participants. Psychological Pain, Suicidal Ideation, Life Satisfaction Questionnaire and Depression Anxiety Stress Scale's (DASS) depression subtest were administered to all participants. According to results, it was found that while bisexual and homosexual individuals had higher psychological pain, suicidal ideation and depression scores compared to heterosexual individuals, yet they had lower scores on life satisfaciton and perceived social support compared to heterosexual individuals. While the perceived social support did not have a statistically significant difference between homosexual and heterosexual individuals, it was observed that bisexual individuals had lower perceived social support scores compared to heterosexual individuals. In the second aim of this research on predicting suicidal ideation, life satisfaction explained 60% of the total variance, and social support explained 2.8%. According to the results, the information that bisexual and homosexual individuals experience more psychological pain compared to heterosexual individuals is a first in the literature of Turkey. The results are discussed in the light of limitaitons, implications and with the emphasis on the importance of support programs for individuals with bisexual and homosexual individuals.
